Absolute Rotary Encoder for Robot Joints

An absolute rotary encoder reports a coded angular position so a controller can identify the axis position within the supported measuring range. This RFQ page supports encoders for robot joints, servo axes, actuators, gimbals, and precision mechanisms. It is not a fixed encoder model or a promise of compatibility with an unspecified drive. RobotPiece reviews position behavior, mechanical integration, electrical interface, protocol, environment, and control architecture before proposing a suitable encoder configuration.

A multiturn absolute encoder retains or determines turn information in addition to position within one revolution, but implementations and power-loss behavior vary. A magnetic absolute encoder may offer useful packaging or environmental characteristics, while the actual accuracy, repeatability, latency, and installation sensitivity depend on the design. A hollow shaft absolute encoder can support through-bore routing or concentric integration, but bore size alone does not define the mounting stack. For a robot joint encoder, distinguish motor-side commutation feedback from output-side joint position measurement because the locations serve different control and accuracy goals.

Selection and Engineering Requirements

A multiturn absolute encoder should be checked for its retained turn behavior and startup requirements. A magnetic absolute encoder can have different installation sensitivities from other sensing principles. A hollow shaft absolute encoder adds mechanical integration requirements around bore, alignment, and target mounting. A robot joint encoder must also be located according to whether it measures motor motion or output-joint position.

Compare a multiturn absolute encoder or magnetic absolute encoder by the real startup and accuracy needs. A hollow shaft absolute encoder or robot joint encoder also requires a drawing that defines alignment, mounting, and the measured shaft.

State whether the application needs single-turn or multiturn position and what should happen after power loss. Define required resolution, absolute accuracy, repeatability, update rate, latency, and permissible position error separately. These terms are not interchangeable. Explain whether the encoder provides motor commutation, servo feedback, joint output feedback, homing, safety-related position information, or independent verification.

Mechanical information should include the shaft style, bore, outside diameter, axial length, allowable runout, mounting pattern, air gap if relevant, allowable speed, cable exit, and available assembly access. Provide the shaft and housing drawing and describe how axial and radial alignment will be controlled. Electrical information should cover supply, signal or protocol, connector, cable length, drive or controller, clock and timing expectations, diagnostic needs, and electrical environment. Also state temperature, contamination, shock, vibration, magnetic-field exposure, sealing, and any functional-safety or redundancy requirement.

Scope and Configuration to Confirm

The quoted scope may include an encoder assembly, readhead and target, or another matched set. Cable, mating connector, magnet or code disk, hub, mounting ring, alignment tool, interface converter, evaluation board, software, parameter file, and commissioning support are not assumed. The quotation should identify the position format, electrical interface, protocol behavior, mechanical tolerances, installation requirements, and included documentation.

Current specifications are confirmed per requirement. RobotPiece does not convert resolution into an accuracy claim or infer protocol compatibility from connector shape. Product-type illustrations are visual references only. The final sensing principle, geometry, target, connector, cable, and appearance depend on the approved encoder configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are absolute rotary encoder resolution and accuracy the same?

No. Resolution describes the available position increments, while accuracy describes how closely reported position corresponds to actual position under defined conditions. Repeatability and latency are additional, separate performance measures.

Can one encoder handle both motor commutation and joint output measurement?

Sometimes, but the answer depends on motor, reducer, control architecture, mounting location, protocol, timing, accuracy, and startup behavior. State both functions explicitly so the feedback arrangement can be checked.
